Auxiliary Event - Engaging men in personal, public storytelling to advance positive masculinities and social justice: Insights from the Men’s Story Project

Session Information

This participatory auxiliary event will share about the work of the Men's Story Project (MSP) and effective approaches to engaging men in personal, public storytelling for gender/social justice.

Founded in 2008, the MSP is an acclaimed peer leadership and storytelling initiative for healthy masculinities. Rooted in interdisciplinary research, the MSP supports partner organizations in creating live storytelling productions in which diverse groups of men publicly share personal stories that critically examine masculinity norms and promote health, equality, and social change.

In MSP productions, presenters share candid stories on topics such as family and romantic relationships, friendship, mental health, gender-based violence, LGBTQIA+ issues, journeys of change, and intersections of masculinities with race/ethnicity and other aspects of identity. They share their stories via prose, poetry, dance, visual art, and other creative mediums, followed by facilitated audience dialogue and a resource fair. The live events are filmed to create varied kinds of media.

To date, 22 original MSP productions have taken place in Costa Rica, Guatemala, the United States, Canada, Chile, Gaza, and the West Bank, in partnership with organizations including Puntos de Encuentro, UN Women, Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, and many universities. MSP is designed for local adaptation and leadership; partner organizations receive training, project materials, and guidance on ethics, participant wellbeing, and harm prevention in personal storytelling work. The MSP's recognitions include a ShareCare Emmy Award for excellence in digital health media (Men's Health category) and a Public Health Innovator Award from the Harvard School of Public Health.

In this interactive event, participants will explore MSP's theoretical foundations, pedagogy, and evaluation findings, along with practical strategies for helping men craft impactful personal stories that challenge patriarchal norms and promote gender justice. We will discuss approaches to working with men who have caused harm or are sharing other stories of personal change, and ways to facilitate storytelling processes that are safe, brave, ethical, and creative. The workshop will include presentation, screening of powerful videos, and ample time for group discussion.

The workshop will be led by Dr. Jocelyn Lehrer, Founder and Director of the Men's Story Project.
