Rapid Qualitative Assessment (RQA) is increasingly recognised by Ministries of Health, WHO, UNICEF and response partners as a powerful SBCC/RCCE tool, enabling rapid data collection on community perceptions, behaviours and barriers, and to use insights to strengthen emergency responses. Lessons from the 2014-16 West African Ebola outbreak and COVID-19 have established the value of integrating social science approaches into outbreaks and emergency responses. RQA builds on this and demonstrates that rapid collection, analysis and translation of qualitative data builds trust and informs better targeted interventions and activities across RCCE and other response pillars.
In recent responses to cholera, Mpox, Ebola, Marburg and drought, RCCE partners and social scientists have applied RQAs to collect data with affected and at-risk communities, co-developed recommendations and communicated findings to response decision-makers at country, regional and global levels. These rapid processes (typically completed in 1-2 weeks), can contribute to reducing deaths, number and spread of cases, while also improving community trust and representation in response actors.
In this highly-interactive skills-building workshop, participants will be guided by experienced emergency response professionals through experiential exercises that simulate the RQA process. Participants will practice using tools, developing recommendations and communicating findings to support community-centred emergency response through an outbreak scenario in Central America. Learnings and tools shared through the workshop will be critical for SBC practitioners wanting to implement more effective, community-centred outbreak responses and valuable for anyone wishing to gain skills in rapid qualitative data collection and utilisation.
