Addressing stigma and discrimination toward children and youth with disabilities through SBC

Session Information

In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to explore the Global Toolkit for addressing stigma and discrimination toward children and youth with disabilities through SBC, developed by UNICEF in collaboration with various partners. In addition, the Sightsavers toolkit for inclusive communication will be used during the workshop.

The Toolkit to address stigma and discrimination was developed to assist practitioners, programme officers, members of OPDs, and persons with disabilities to engage effectively with SBC programming and practices and to contribute positively to behavioural and social change projects that promote inclusion in society and address stigma and discrimination across all levels of the social-ecological model. It includes empowering people with disabilities and their families, ensuring inclusive service provision, engaging with communities on stigma and mobilizing partnerships, and more.

The session will provide participants with the opportunity to explore multiple modules in the Toolkit and build their skills in essential inclusive practices, with a particular emphasis on programming areas where SBC practitioners might have less experience, such as:

  • Inclusive evidence generation to inform stigma reduction Theory of Changes

  • Improving the quality of services for children with disabilities and their families

  • Creating an effective Results Framework or M&E plan for their situation

Participants who complete this skills building workshop will be able to use the Toolkit more effectively in their contexts to guide the conduct of research, connect with individual and communities, identify and select appropriate approaches and implementing strategies, create activities and materials, and assess progress on creating more inclusive communities and reducing stigma and discrimination.
