Seeing Change, Speaking Truth: Using Photovoice to Elevate Community Voices in SBC

Session Information

Photovoice is a participatory methodology that equips community members to document their realities through photography, analyze their images, and use them as tools for dialogue and advocacy. Rooted in equity and inclusion, Photovoice shifts power by giving marginalized groups the authority to decide which stories are told and how.

This Skills-Building Workshop will introduce participants in the Photovoice process through a hands-on, learn-by-doing approach. Participants will begin with a brief orientation to Photovoice principles, ethics, and applications in social and behavior change communication (SBCC). They will then engage in a guided exercise: taking photos on their phones in response to a study question, applying the SHOWeD framework (See, Happen, Our lives, Why, Do) to analyze meaning, and practicing collaborative sorting to generate shared themes.

The workshop will conclude with a mini-simulation of a Photovoice output, such as an exhibition or group dialogue, demonstrating how photographs and narratives can be transformed into powerful advocacy and program tools.

By experiencing the methodology as participants, attendees will gain the skills, tools, and confidence to replicate Photovoice in their own work. The session is highly relevant for practitioners designing equity-focused SBC interventions in low-literacy or marginalized contexts, and for those seeking participatory methods to strengthen program design, community mobilization, and advocacy.

This workshop is not just about learning a tool, it is about experiencing how storytelling through photos can reimagine communication, amplify hidden voices, and catalyze community-driven change.
