Who says global health research can't include storyboards and cameras, and have a powerful visual impact? In this workshop, we invite artists, researchers, practitioners, and community changemakers into the world of Collaborative Filmmaking (CFM)-an arts-based, participatory method that transforms traditional research into a shared process of storytelling, creation, and reflection.
Over the past eight years, CFM has taken shape across nine global projects-from the highlands of Madagascar to urban corners of the U.S.-addressing topics often shrouded in silence: menstruation, bereavement, alcohol use, mental health, and beyond. Each project asks: How might film serve as a method of inquiry, an intervention, and a vehicle for social change? Participants harness their own voices to capture lived experiences, disrupt traditional power dynamics, and generate rich, emotional insight.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the key steps to implement Collaborative Filmmaking, a visual and creative method, and have the opportunity to create their own films using creative exercises.
CFM is not just a method; it is a movement toward visual equity-disrupting extractive research practices and amplifying the voices too often left outside the frame.
