Scaling Climate-Friendly Eating Through Youth Leadership: The Meatless Monday Indonesia Experience.

Session Information

Meatless Monday Indonesia (MMI) is an urban-focused movement engaging communities, including youth, to promote climate-friendly eating habits and strengthen local plant-based food-system resilience. Central to MMI's approach is Meaningful Youth Participation (MYP), which mobilizes action across schools/universities, youth-led organizations, community groups, social media platforms, and a structured internship program nurturing young leaders. Through this participatory model, youth are involved in planning, implementation, and evaluation as facilitators, communicators, and campaign designers.

MMI activities include human-centered design workshops, urban farming sessions, interactive edu-game learning in schools, campus roadshows, climate-conscious local cooking demonstrations, poster competitions, and activations for Youth and Earth Day. These are complemented by online campaigns reaching millions with local plant-based ideas and eco-friendly lifestyle suggestions. Youth interns co-design campaigns, produce digital content, and lead peer-to-peer awareness efforts on planetary health diets, ensuring cultural relevance across Indonesia's communities.

This integrated strategy links sustainable diets, local food systems, climate action, and strengthening collective resilience. Early outcomes show increased youth understanding of plant-based options and the climate impact of food choices, enhanced capacity to raise peer awareness, and expanding partnerships with educational institutions and youth networks.

MMI demonstrates how multi-level youth engagement-online and offline-can shift socialnorms and everyday lifestyles toward healthier, more sustainable diets through the simple habit of going meatless every Monday. By empoweringyoung people as designers, communicators, and peer educators, MMI highlights how youth-led approaches can accelerate planetary health diets and inspire broader systemic change.
