Redefining Evidence for Climate-Responsive SRHR: A Participatory Knowledge Translation Model in Bangladesh

Climate change increasingly disrupts reproductive health in Bangladesh, particularly affecting women and girls in flood-prone and displaced communities. These disruptions-ranging from contraceptive stockouts to maternal health risks-are often overlooked in climate adaptation policies. Traditional knowledge translation methods are linear, expert-driven, and slow, limiting responsiveness to urgent, context-specific SRHR and family planning (FP) challenges. To address this gap, Share-Net Bangladesh implemented the Collaborative Rapid Improvement Model for Knowledge Translation (CRIM-KT), a participatory, co-owned approach that reconceptualizes what counts as evidence. CRIM-KT engages researchers, policymakers, health professionals, and community stakeholders in iterative learning cycles to jointly generate, interpret, and apply knowledge. Lived experience, field observations, and stakeholder insights are treated as legitimate forms of evidence, ensuring ethical data practices, equitable ownership, and contextually relevant application. Between November 2021 and March 2023, CRIM-KT facilitated structured learning sessions, action periods, and creative knowledge products-policy briefs, workshops, and advocacy toolsto link climate change with SRHR and FP outcomes. Key results include formal recognition of climate-SRHR linkages, establishment of a "Climate Change and SRHR Forum", and integration of these considerations into the Operation Health Plan. This model accelerated knowledge uptake, reducing the time from research to policy action. CRIM-KT demonstrates that ethical, inclusive, and creative approaches to evidence can transform both policy and practice. By shifting decision-making power toward communities and stakeholders, it ensures that evidence is locally relevant, actionable, and co-owned, providing a replicable framework for strengthening SRHR and FP integration in climate adaptation strategies worldwide.
Driving Water Security Through Individual and Collective Behavior: Insights from a Global Landscape and Pilot Design

While Hardin's "tragedy of the commons" underscores the risks of overuse, Ostrom's work highlights the potential for cooperation, trust, and shared governance to mitigate these risks. Despite extensive research on institutional and behavioral dimensions of water resource management (WRM), the integration of Social and Behavior Change (SBC) approaches remains limited. To address this gap, we conducted a landscape review of 82 global publications (2018–2023) and 20 Key Informant Interviews with WRM, CPR, and SBC experts. Using the Behavioral Drivers Model, we analyzed individual and collective behavioral influences and identified promising SBC strategies. Findings reveal that 53% of reviewed publications referenced SBC-relevant theories-primarily Game Theory, Theory of Reasoned Action, and Nudge Theory-often emphasizing individual decision-making. Interventions in agriculture and domestic water sectors employed participatory monitoring, incentives, and nudges, with social marketing and experimental games emerging as effective tools for engaging social norms. Informants stressed the need for diagnostic tools and experiential methods to foster collective action. SBC remains underutilized, with insufficient focus on social cohesion and collective efficacy-critical for CPR stewardship. We propose an SBC intervention combining experiential games with the Community Action Cycle to promote adaptive behaviors and long-term water governance. Integrating SBC into WRM can bridge individual and communal interests, making resource risks tangible, reinforcing accountability, and catalyzing sustainable, socially resonant solutions.
Mainstreaming Social and Behavioral Change Communication (SBCC) in Metro Manila’s Solid Waste Management: Baseline Insights for the 25-Year SWM Master Plan

Evidence shows that multi-pronged Social and Behavioral Change Communication (SBCC) strategies enhance the effectiveness of health, nutrition, and disaster preparedness programs. However, in Metro Manila, solid waste management (SWM) efforts remain heavily anchored on traditional Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaigns, with minimal integration of SBCC principles. This paper presents findings from an SBCC-focused assessment conducted as an input to the 25-year Metro Manila Solid Waste Management Master Plan. The study employed a desk review, key informant consultations, online focus group discussions, and a formative survey involving approximately 500 respondents across 17 Local Government Units (LGUs). Results show that while all LGUs implement various communication activities primarily focused on waste segregation and collection these remain largely informational rather than behavior-centered. Posters, flyers, and social media are the most frequently used channels, but with limited emphasis on behavioral drivers, audience segmentation, or sustained engagement. The paper offers baseline insights for designing future SBCC interventions tailored to local contexts. It provides a practical guide for LGUs and SWM stakeholders on mainstreaming SBCC into existing and upcoming SWM initiatives, with the aim of strengthening long-term behavioral outcomes. Although not exhaustive, the findings highlight opportunities to move beyond IEC to more strategic, evidence-based SBCC approaches for improved solid waste management in Metro Manila.
Redefining Evidence of Resilience: A Participatory Approach to Household Data Ownership in India

Social Innovation Studio (SiS), in collaboration with Vrutti, designed and tested a participatory model to rethink how evidence is generated and owned at the community level. Implemented across three districts-Puri (Odisha), Gulbarga (Karnataka), and Barwani (Madhya Pradesh)-with 300 households and 18 community mobilisers ("Resilient Saathis"), the project sought to simplify and localise the idea of 'resilience'- the starting point of the enquiry being- how do you create the understanding of a term (resilience) without direct translation in local languages?
Moving away from an extractive 100-question survey to calculate resilience scores- a process that distanced communities from their own data, the team developed a Household Resilience Journal-a visual, low-literacy tool co-created with Saathis(tool mobilisers) and households. The journal enabled families to map their own resilience across four domains-livelihood and income, financial security, quality of life, and social mobility-while setting goals and tracking progress collaboratively with Saathis.
Through this approach, evidence shifted from complex numeric scores on digital platforms to lived, relatable narratives and actionable insights, stored with the families themselves. Communities became co-authors of their data, and Saathis evolved from data collectors to facilitators of dialogue. The model demonstrated how behavioural design and systems thinking can transform evidence generation from a compliance exercise to a more mutually beneficial process of collective learning-enabling vulnerable households not only to understand their resilience but to act upon it.
