From Taboo to Talk: Facilitating Intergenerational Dialogue on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in sub-saharan Africa

Multimedia Showcase 04:00 PM - 05:15 PM (America/Panama) 2026/06/22 21:00:00 UTC - 2026/06/22 22:15:00 UTC
Across Sub-Saharan Africa, taboos and stereotypes around Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) continue to limit open dialogue, restrict access to services, and reinforce inequality. To address these barriers, IPPFAR partnered with Melon Rouge to launch Common Senses, a campaign designed to normalize and encourage having sensitive conversations. Within this initiative, the "Common Senses by Generations" video series was created as a multimedia intervention that brings together individuals across generations to explore SRHR topics through humor, storytelling, and play.
The format blends interactive games with guided dialogue prompts that helps participants move seamlessly between lighthearted and serious discussions on SRHR. This balance makes taboo subjects more approachable and demonstrates that conversations about topics like relationships, consent, and body rights are both possible and necessary. Linked below are the first two episodes that the team created and produced.
IPPFAR Talk Show Episode 01 - Gender NormsIPPFAR: Talk Show Episode 2 - Comprehensive Sexuality EducationThe team hopes to expand the series in the future, pending additional funding.
The series gained significant traction, reaching 4.03 million views across six countries and generating 55,000 direct engagements from just two videos. Audiences described it as bold and relevant, with many requesting wider distribution. Beyond reach, the videos highlighted the power of culturally grounded multimedia to build trust and spark openness, creating spaces where dialogue can unfold naturally and meaningfully. By blending authenticity, emotion, and local context, such content can make sensitive topics more approachable and relatable - paving the way for broader and more lasting change.

Hablar Transforma.

Multimedia Showcase 04:00 PM - 05:15 PM (America/Panama) 2026/06/22 21:00:00 UTC - 2026/06/22 22:15:00 UTC

Influencing norms through media

Multimedia Showcase 04:00 PM - 05:15 PM (America/Panama) 2026/06/22 21:00:00 UTC - 2026/06/22 22:15:00 UTC
What Is Left of Us is a short film produced by Zikoko that explores how gender norms, power dynamics, and reproductive decision-making shape the lives of young Nigerian women. Through the story of Mariam, a married woman who chooses to get an IUD without her husband's consent, the film highlights the emotional, social, and economic consequences women face when asserting bodily autonomy in patriarchal contexts. Mariam's decision triggers escalating conflict, mistrust, and eventual separation, illustrating how deeply embedded expectations around motherhood and fertility influence marital relationships. As she rebuilds her life, Mariam begins exploring income-generating opportunities, underscoring the link between financial independence, agency, and resilience.
Developed for audiences aged 18–24 and distributed via YouTube and university screenings across Nigeria, the film uses relatable storytelling, familiar settings, and accessible language to spark conversations on reproductive health, gender norms, consent, and shared decision-making. Screenings were accompanied by facilitated discussions that revealed strong audience engagement and a willingness among young people to question cultural, religious, and relational expectations that shape reproductive choices.
The project contributes to the Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) field by demonstrating the power of narrative media to challenge restrictive norms and model positive behaviors. By integrating themes of SRH, relationships, and economic empowerment, What Is Left of Us offers a holistic approach that resonates with young audiences. The film underscores the importance of centering women's autonomy, involving men as partners in change, and leveraging digital platforms to expand reach and spark dialogue at scale
