CARE's Women Lead in Emergencies (WLiE) model is a proven approach to supporting women directly affected by crisis to participate in, influence, and lead humanitarian action. Grounded in gender-transformative programming, WLiE enables community-based women's groups to take collective action in disaster, conflict, and displacement contexts, strengthening inclusive, locally-led humanitarian response and recovery.
This interactive session will introduce participants to the WLiE model and toolkit, which provide a practical and adaptable methodology for increasing women's voice, agency, and leadership in crisis-affected settings. Participants will gain hands-on experience through selected exercises from two key activity areas of the model - Reflect (gender, social norms, power, participation, and leadership) and Co-Create (defining women's own measures of success and stakeholder behaviour changes).
By connecting the WLiE model to Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) principles, the session will demonstrate how SBCC approaches can be applied in humanitarian and nexus contexts to challenge inequitable norms and promote women's collective action and leadership in crisis response and recovery.
