Mis- and disinformation are now recognised as among the key challenges faced by audiences globally. Internet access is growing across markets - even among historically disconnected populations. In tandem, access and use of social media platforms is increasing globally. Recent policy shifts among these platforms have led to a decreased focus on content moderation and therefore a proliferation of mis- and disinformation. These converging trends mean that global audiences are more vulnerable than ever to being exposed to mis- and disinformation, necessitating novel approaches to identifying risks related to mis- and disinformation as well as to building resilience among audiences.
This panel highlights three unique approaches to tackling this issue - each supported by robust research methods and distinct target audiences. Using a talk show-style format, a facilitator from BBC Media Action will host a semi-formal discussion amongst three panellists who conducted the relevant mis- and disinformation research and interventions. The host will introduce panellists and then invite them to compare and contrast their goals, approaches and tools, challenges and lessons learned, in an iterative and interactive way. The host will also invite the audience to contribute relevant ideas and experiences and to ask questions of the panellists both during and after the discussion.
This panel will open up a conversation about selecting strategies and tools for research and learning around digital SBCC through sharing of experiences and lessons, with the aim of informing and progressing understanding amongst researchers, implementers and funders.
